Then you’ll probably like this too. I actually told a friend of mine to buy this like a year ago, but he bought a 85 325e instead. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/cto/548838…

Not to devalue your comment, but if I were to have a 4wd Toyota it would be a Previa.

Problem is I’m a southern Opponaut and we don’t take too kindly to rust... If it was rust free for even 2500 I would have a shipper there tomorrow.

Probably 350,000 miles on it. But worth asking, since they just updated the ad.

Oh man so good. And an auto like my wife’s was (thank God I had an actual SR5 for myself).
Definitely not worth a thousand though. See, that’s just all the rust you can see now. Underneath is probably like the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean, and the lift gate is literally being held together by that sweet paint.
If I ever found a rust free example, I would never sell it ever. The catch is, there’s no such thing.

I emailed about the one I posted above. Granted, I don't have the history with them that you do, but rust-wise it's one of the nicest I've seen.

I just spoke on the phone with that guy. It actually sounds really promising, though I know better than to get my hopes up. He said I asked all the right questions and most of the people contacting him are just scammers. He’s going to take the car to his mechanic to get a basic run-down of any issues for me and if he thinks the car will make it 600 miles then we might be good to go.

Gonna pester you again about these. The guy selling the one in Flagstaff just called me and it sounds like this might actually work out. He acquired it from a family friend but says its just too small for him. Only rust is that small smudge on the rear wheel well on the driver’s side. And it might need a new battery. He's going to take it to his mechanic to see if there's anything that would prevent me driving it home. I'm planning on mostly interstate and I have roadside but just in case, any tools I absolutely need with me for a minor emergency? Any tricks I should know? Or if you feel like emailing, smobgirl at gmail works. I appreciate all of your advice so far!

No problem. It seems concerning that even the seller doesn’t feel comfortable saying (or lying) that it could drive home. How could he not know? I know I am often negative regarding cars for sale, but I skeptical of all things haha.
I don’t feel like there’s any tricks I can tell you. The two I bought were in rough shape and needed a lot of work. If the car has been sitting, bring lots of extra coolant. I had a cracked radiator, a bad thermostat, and a bad thermostat gasket on mine. If it feels like it might stall, have a flathead handy and just crank up the idle speed on the carburetor. Drove like that for many months, no shame.
Just look out for all the rust you can. Rocker panels and lift gate especially on these. Check EVERY gague, every little electrical thing you can, climate controls, etc. A blower fan and resistor on these is a fortune. If the rear diff is making noises, don’t buy it. If the 4wd EL gear (granny gear) doesn’t work, don’t buy it. You do not want to scavenge the four corners of the planet for this transmission.
If it had AC and it was deleted, DO NOT BUY IT, unless the seller can show it was professionally done. I had lots of expensive electrical problems on my second one because someone did this in their backyard and fucked up all the wiring cutting corners.
Anecdotes, I know. But good luck.

Well he says its really reliable, great little car and he loves it, but hes never driven it that far and I think it’s a bit of chivalry more than fear of its dependability. He kept mentioning that my (imaginary) husband could easily maintain the car, so I think he’s worried about sending a younger female alone into the great unknown.
Has A/C and it supposedly actually works. And a CD player. I think it currently is running on a spare battery he had laying around, which is not the one specific to the car. I’ll check that out/replace for the drive home. He’s going to email me any other comments from the mechanic. I might call the shop too just to reassure myself.

Hmmm. Doesn’t sound too promising. And don’t trust that “my mechanic said” crap.
For reference, my father in law was over 250 pounds and 6'7" and daily drove a tercel wagon for a decade comfortably.
Bring your own mechanic with you (or someone super savvy/shade tree) or don’t buy it.
My advice.

Sounds reasonable. Thanks again :) My gut instinct is that he's trustworthy but not particularly mechanically inclined, combined with being older/protective, but definitely a fair point. I mean, S2000 guy trusted that seller.
